Netflix has revealed an exciting first look at its upcoming animated series, “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” set to premiere on October 10, 2024. The series, which continues the legacy of the iconic adventurer Lara Croft, is voiced by MCU star Hayley Atwell and picks up where the Tomb Raider Survivor trilogy left off.

A Continuation of the Tomb Raider Saga

Set after the events of Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the new series follows Lara Croft on a new set of perilous solo adventures. The storyline begins when a powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a mysterious thief with personal ties to Lara, forcing her to return home and face her past.

Adventure Awaits in Exotic Locations

Fans can expect Lara Croft to journey through breathtaking, dangerous locales and explore forgotten tombs, all while confronting the complexities of her identity and her role as a hero. The series teases intense action, supernatural elements, and existential themes as Lara grapples with grief, death, and the consequences of her past actions.

Voice Cast and Characters

Alongside Hayley Atwell as Lara Croft, the series features Earl Baylon reprising his role as Jonah Maiava from the Survivor trilogy. Allen Maldonado joins the cast as Zip, and fans speculate that Lara may team up with Kaz, a character introduced in the Tomb Raider comics by Rhianna Pratchett, who is notably the first confirmed LGBTQ+ character in the series.

Production and Creative Team

“Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” is produced by Legendary Television and showcases the talents of showrunner and executive producer Tasha Huo (known for The Witcher: Blood Origin and Red Sonja). Other executive producers include Dmitri M. Johnson of dj2 Entertainment (Sonic the Hedgehog, Life Is Strange), Timothy I. Stevenson, Jacob Robinson under his company Tractor Pants (Skull Island), and representatives from Crystal Dynamics including Dallas Dickinson and Noah Hughes. The animation is handled by Powerhouse Animation, the studio behind popular series like Castlevania and Blood of Zeus, with Brad Graeber serving as executive producer.

A New Chapter in Lara Croft’s Story

This new series bridges the gap between the rebooted Survivor trilogy and the original games, offering fans a fresh yet familiar take on Lara Croft’s adventures. With over 25 years of history, Lara Croft remains one of gaming’s most enduring characters, and “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” promises to deliver an epic continuation of her story.

What’s Next for the Tomb Raider Franchise?

In addition to Netflix’s animated series, Amazon is developing a live-action Tomb Raider project with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator of Fleabag and co-star in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, attached as writer and executive producer. The search for the actress to portray Lara Croft in this new iteration is currently underway.
